UNIVERSITIES

Fredericton is home to five universities:

University of New Brunswick (UNB)

Through two centuries of educational leadership, UNB has remained at the forefront of Canadian universities. UNB is Canada's oldest English university and one of the first public universities established in North America.

Known for its innovation, the university has pioneered programs that are helping to make life better for New Brunswickers and people around the world. UNB was the first university in Canada to offer a forest engineering program, to create a computer science faculty, and to introduce a degree program designed specifically to educate the leaders of tomorrow - Renaissance College.

UNB research accounts for 80 per cent of all university research conducted in the province, and its research programs are among the best in the country, helping to attract the brightest students, scholars and researchers. UNB's Office of Research Services promotes technology transfer and business development, facilitating access by public and private sector clients to the expertise that exists at UNB.

Among UNB's research endeavours:

  • UNB is home to the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy, which conducts policy research that helps Canadian communities provide better education and care for their children.
  • Leading research organizations from around the world are adopting the methods developed at UNB's Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research Centre. It is the only MRI material science lab in Canada and the only university-based lab of its kind in North America.
  • Researchers at UNB's Laboratory for Threat-Material Detection have developed a novel three-dimensional imaging system for scanning passenger luggage prior to airline flights. The technology has been licensed to a private American company for commercialization.
  • The university's Ocean Mapping Group developed the world's leading technology for mapping the ocean floor. The researchers are now playing a key role in the Law of the Sea agreement, a global initiative which involves setting the legal boundaries of the Continental Shelf and the division of trillions of dollars worth of untapped seabed resources.
  • UNB plays an integral role in the health and wellness of the province and the country. Researchers are developing programs to help children battle obesity, they are creating strategies for Canadians with chronic illness, and they are ensuring that children reach their full potential so that they have an equal opportunity to learn.

UNB's Institute of Biomedical Engineering is world renowned for designing and developing myoelectric control systems for artificial arms. Myoelectric prostheses are artificial limbs controlled by the electric signal from muscles in the residual limb.

UNB's College of Extended Learning is the outreach arm of the university. The college offers management development training, professional programs, distance education, part-time degree studies and adult learner services. Its work is strengthened by partnerships with private business, provincial government departments and other educational institutions.

UNB is known for its ground-breaking research, the depth and variety of its academic programs and its accomplished faculty and staff. The university is making a significant difference in New Brunswick, playing a fundamental role in the economic, social and cultural well-being of the province.
